Each garden project is a puzzle willing to be solved. In this case, designing a modest horseshoe-shaped garden in Bernal Heights that provides privacy and a path (where space is limited), HOA regulations and windy site conditions. The garden came with an assortment of potted Jade plants left from the previous owner, an omen of prosperity and good fortune, and an assortment of buried flagstones begging to be repurposed.
We reconfigured the flagstones to create a winding path and added some steps along the sloped side of the garden. We primarily used a mix of low-water plants from Australia and New Zealand and California natives. We also saved one of the Jade plants to pay homage to the previous owner.
